Free Trade Zones/Warehouses

In April 1997 the Government designated the site of Bellara (wilaya of Jijel, new port of Djendjen) as a free  trade zone. It is possible that another zone will be established at the Algiers International Fairgrounds next year. Foreign investors in these zones will be exempt from taxes and customs duties. Foreign suppliers can establish customs depots to stock goods for sale in Algeria.

Membership in Free Trade Arrangements

Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, and Libya formed the Arab Maghreb Union (known by its French acronym UMA) in 1989. They agreed on a free trade zone but did not establish a timetable. Algeria is negotiating the establishment of a free trade zone with the European Union. Agreement may be reached in 1998. Algeria plans to become a member of the World Trade Organization in 1998.
